Conformation

Conformation

Is your basenji a good example of the breed based on the official breed standard? One way to find out is to enter a conformation show and let the judge decide which basenji most closely resembles the “perfect” basenji. Typically, the dog must be intact (not neutered or spayed) and also registered with AKC or UKC (within the United States) to participate.

This requires a moderate amount of training for your dog in standing in a show pose, gaiting around the ring, and allowing a judge to examine him/her.

Rally Obedience

Rally Obedience

Basenjis excel at Rally Obedience where you and your dog complete a variety of activities defined at stations along a course. One station might be “sit”, another one “down”. The lowest level is on leash and verbal encouragement is allowed!

The novice level of Rally requires moderate training. More significant level of training is needed to move to the higher levels of Rally competition.

Lure Coursing

Lure Coursing

Most basenjis will chase anything that moves! Lure coursing events are held by AKC and ASFA for sighthounds only. Dogs chase a white plastic bag lure around courses (typically 600 yards and over) with up to 3 other dogs of its own breed. Also, there is a singles class where your dog can run by him/herself.

There are no prerequisites if you run your dog in the singles competition, but in the group competition, you will need to demonstrate he/she can run with other dogs.

You will need to do some practice releasing your dog from the box, and get your dog comfortable wearing a muzzle. But beyond that no additional training is required. Your dog will need to be comfortable running with other dogs.
